An open letter to Governor Bredesen
Dear Governor Bredesen,
We believe you are missing an opportunity to thank the people that are paying the bills for state government.
Regarding the two newspaper articles linked below, we understand the political realities of an election year but it sure would be nice for you to emphasize that this money being handed out must FIRST be earned by TENNESSEE TAXPAYERS and then paid out of their FAMILY BUDGETS.
Your references to "state government" or "the state" or "federally funded", i.e. "I am pleased state government can support local communities..." "I am pleased the state was able to contribute..." may be technically correct but you are missing a huge opportunity to thank the taxpayers of Tennessee. The taxpayers must pay taxes from the same family budget that pays the house payment, pays for groceries, pays the car payment, saves for retirement, etc.
We ask you, in the future, to please use these "grant" opportunities to acknowledge the real source of this money, the family budgets of the hard working taxpayers of Tennessee.
