Fun Fall Festivals

Early Autumn is the most beautiful time of year in Southeast Tennessee. Temperatures in the mornings and evenings are a little cooler than during the past few months, yet the days are still mostly sunny and warm.

Fall is a great time to spend outdoors, so the entire month of October is jam packed with fun fall festivities that all the whole family can enjoy.

Downtown Athens, Tennessee will be presenting "Pumpkintown 2010," a free fall festival celebrating the history, heritage and harvest of  the community. Over 8, 000 visitors are expected to attend this event which starts Friday, October 8th, with the Heritage Quilt Show at the Arts Center at 320 N. White Street in Athens from 10am to 5:30pm on Friday and Saturday. On Saturday, October 9th, events begin at 8:30am with the Angie Grubb Memorial Run starting at All Star Sports on White Street, followed by an Opening Ceremony at the Legacy Productions stage. Events will include a Mutt Strut, dog parade and costume contest beginning at 10:30am, where all proceeds from the costume contest go to the McMinn County Animal shelter.

Patterns of the Past, an historical downtown walking tour with Mulley LeNoir of the Civil War Quilt trail will start at the Robert E. Lee Hotel at 10:15am. Heritage Exhibits and Demonstrations will include Revolutionary War Living Heritage encampments, Civil War Skirmish re-enactment, homemade Heritage items, Cherokee Living History exhibitors, educators and dancers, tomahawk throw and blow dart demonstrations, African American quilt display, historical walking tours. Vendors of all kinds will be selling various arts and crafts as well as delicious food. Some fun activities for the kids will be going on throughout the festival. Around the square there will be face painting,  temporary tattoos and soap box derby cars. At Knight Park; a petting zoo, pony rides, goat milking, dog obedience demonstration and children's clothesline art exhibition. At the Family Fun Park there will be a 68 ft inflatable obstacle course, a climbing wall, mechanical bull, bungie jumping and speed pitch with radar. Family activities around town will be a shooting gallery, sand art, pumpkin ring toss, pumpkin bowling, history scavenger hunt, pumpkin carving and crafts and much more. RiverRocks of Chattanooga is an outdoor festival which celebrates the wonderful natural resources of the Tennessee Valley, and the health benefits achieved from a healthy active outdoor lifestyle. This year's fall Outdoor Festival will be presented October 1st through 10th at locations throughout Chattanooga and the surrounding region. 

This 10 day event will be filled with numerous activities and events for all ages that will take place on the river, up the mountains and in parks and conservancies of the Tennessee Valley region will include; rock climbing, trail running, kayaking, rowing cycling, off road biking, hiking, and hang gliding. Other exciting events taking place throughout the festival will be hot air balloons rides, sight-seeing river cruises and live music entertainment. Right here in beautiful Cleveland, Tennessee, the 2010 Cleveland Apple Festival will be held during the weekend of  October 16th and 17th. This annual family event held in historical downtown Cleveland will feature an art and craft show, live musical entertainment, pony and hay rides as well as some good family contests. Little Miss Apple Blossom Contests will be in three age categories;  Little Miss Apple Blossom for ages 5-7, Jr. Miss Apple Blossom ages 8-10 and Miss Apple Blossom ages 11-12 .  Contestants will be judged on best country girl or farm  costume and on presentation.  Prizes and trophies will be awarded in each category. Other judged contests at the Apple Festival will include an Apple Dessert Contest where the winner will receive a Chattanooga Choo Choo Getaway for 2, and a Pie Eating Contest, which will be judged in two categories age 7-12 and 13-adults. Winners will receive dinner for two at Applebee's, that is if they are still hungry after all that pie! Admission to the Cleveland Apple Festival is $4 each day, Seniors and children $3. Each year people from all over southeast Tennessee bring their gliders to the annual Chilhowee Gliderport Oktoberfest, located on Hwy 411 between Benton and  Etowah. This year's Oktoberfest will be held over the weekend of October 15-17th and will feature glider rides, instruction, food, fun and fellowship. For more information go to www.chilhowee.com

Every Saturday and Sunday during the month of October from noon to 5pm,  Rock City on Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga will present their 5th annual German festival, Rocktoberfest. Visitors can experience the German culture with authentic German food such as grilled bratwurst, homemade sauerkraut and roast potatoes and of course, specialty Beer. Learn to dance the Polka and listen to German music from live bands like  the Wurstbrats from Chattanooga, Die Mitternaechters from Birmingham, Alabama, Music Meisters and Alpine Mountain Band from Nashville and Laurentz und die Katven from Atlanta.  In addition there will be Beer 101 workshops, face painting, pumpkin painting and German souvenir mugs and hats.
