Balanced News

by Alexandra Edwards

After attending several very important local government meetings some time ago, it was noticed community news reports covering those same events were not how it was at all. In fact, sometimes quite detailed reports were given in local papers of county meetings where no news reporters were even present or had been caught napping. Frustrated by this, my husband, editor of The People News, who by the way had no prior journalistic experience, decided to publish his own newspaper, with sole intentions of giving the public the other side, and to give other people in the community the opportunity to express their views.

When the first printed copy of The People News was published 16 years ago, conservative views in the media were rare. With the exception of a handful of talk radio shows like Rush Limbaugh, the public's only news source were from the left wing national networks and biased newspapers that seemed to be becoming more and more liberal. Readers of The People News would constantly call to express how refreshing it was to discover that there were actually other people out there who shared their own conservative views.

Since then a lot of water has gone under the bridge, talk radio became a much more popular, more and more people gained access to the Internet, frustrated television news hosts have broken away from the liberal networks to form the now most popular Fox News, which presents a more conservative view. Today, there are many more ways to get balanced news, including hundreds of online newspapers, blogs, social media, like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The Internet is full of news sources, not just on computers but on iPads, iPhones and smartphones.

America is now wide awake and informed as to what is going on in the world, whether their views be left or right wing, democrat or republican, liberal or conservative, libertarian or independent, it's news you can choose. We, the people are now able to tell it like it is, whether it be politically correct, outspoken, outrageous, or in your face. Readers can either take it or leave it. Most of middle America share the same traditional views and values. Simply put, they are proud of their country and just wish to keep it the way it is. Thousands of lives were lost fighting for the freedoms that have made this wonderful country so unique. Though many are of European ancestry, they clearly do not want America to be like socialist Europe. They believe the founding fathers knew exactly what they were doing in 1776 and why they were doing it. They also understand the importance of the American Constitution and what it means to them individually.

Just like on the local level when The People News was first published, conservative thinking Americans nationwide have discovered they are not alone, which is probably why the TEA party has become so successful. All across the country millions of Americans are joining TEA party groups in their community and together they CAN make a difference.

Many journalists, radio and television news hosts that have been pushed out of the liberal mainstream media for being too outspoken with their opinions have taken it upon themselves to go it alone so as to continue informing the public with alternative news views. Judge Napolitano, Ann Coulter, Laura Ingram, and John Stossel to name but a few.

Former Fox News reporter and talk radio personality, Glenn Beck recently started his own network channel 'The Blaze,' a conservative/libertarian news, radio and entertainment network available on cable, satellite, and Internet TV. Beck recently announced the network gains over 50 million viewers per month. Former Alaska governor, all American Sarah Palin continues to keep the people informed by supporting the TEA party, writing books, and frequent postings on social media like Facebook and Twitter, gaining thousands upon thousands of likes and followers.

Even some of our major elected officials are doing what they are supposed to do and representing the people by sticking their necks out. Kentucky Senator, Rand Paul, recently announced he was suing President Obama and his administration, calling on the public to be a part of a joint lawsuit against the government for going through private citizens' phone records without due cause. Texas Senator Ted Cruz recently lashed out against fellow Republicans saying "all 45 should have stood together and said of course not to raising the debt ceiling."

When asked several years ago by a colleague of the People News what was the purpose in publishing a newspaper that makes no profit by going against the grain of mainstream media, it was explained, that as former European nationals it breaks our hearts to see precious American values and freedoms witnessed in the early 80s slipping away.

Feeling privileged and blessed to have at least witnessed the atmosphere of small town America, where kids could ride in the back of the pick-up truck to the local ball park, where there was no big government control, no high taxes or unnecessary license fees, national health care, no seat belt laws, no compulsory auto insurance, freedom to use CB radios and speed radar detectors. Even those smaller freedoms sure meant a lot to new immigrants from another country and the need was felt at least to try to protect them.

On reflection, looking back to that era when Edith and Archie Bunker were singing "Those Were The Days," it was 'those' that actually were the days. Ronald Reagan was President, there were stricter immigration laws, school kids pledged allegiance each day, gas cost under a dollar, no Homeland Security, no Obamacare, and America was America.

Lets hope we can keep it that way.
