The Tennessee Mockingbird

For the Legion: Revival of The Back to God Movement

by June Griffin

Author Elizabeth Dilling was a notable lady, who wrote a "Who's Who and Handbook of Radicalism for Patriots" called "The Red Network" in 1934. Her works were widely distributed by the Daughters of the American Revolution, whose patriotic foundations are unexcelled.

Support was joined by "Paul Armstrong, Vice Commander Dept. of Ill., American Legion, and many other valiant Legion Commanders; U.S. Army and Navy Officers Club, the men of the Chicago Military Intelligence; leaders of the Illinois Federation of Women's Clubs; Moody Church and Bible Institute; Women's Patriotic League: Catholic organizations, Community mass meetings, etc., etc." This added to the distinguished "Senator Clayton R. Lusk, who gave a 4,450-page four-volume Report of the Joint Legislative Committee of the State of New York Investigating Seditious Activities, a report based on indisputable documentary evidence made by the committee which he headed...," as well as Attorneys, Californians like Margaret Kerr, 'which placed and has kept the Criminal Syndicalism Law on the statute books of California despite the frantic efforts of the Reds to repeal it-...," Walter Steele, National Republic magazine, Harry Jung, American Vigilant Intelligence Federation, and many more true American dignitaries who were horrified at the inroads that organized Socialism had made into our country.

Among the too-familiar subversives exposed in her 1934 book is the American Civil Liberties Union and though the documentation is too long for this short article, yet one facsimile letter is from founder Roger Baldwin showing him promoting a bill which would "admit alien pacifists to citizenship without promising to bear arms," and complaining that the patriotic would most likely show up to oppose this measure.
Yeah, that's what we do, Roger.

This massive movement of patriotic Americans had its effect and the Reds and their initiatives were pushed back into the arms of their Russian counterparts. We always have to fight for freedom. And Legionnaires have been in the forefront.

The National Chaplain of the Legion once wrote; "The 'Back to God' Movement' was designed to save America....In recent years those who would destroy our way of life, have tried to lead us away from our belief in the Creator, to sap our spiritual and moral strength..." You see, "For God and Country," means something. This "Back to God" movement has long been a part of The American Legion activities... it became a matter of national policy at the 1951 convention at Miami, Florida.

There, the 'Back to God' Movement finally became a mandated activity of the American Legion and at the 1954 convention in Washington, DC., it was made a permanent program of the organization."

"The 'Back to God' program is basic Americanism. Under our own American philosophy of government this withdrawal of human rights is impossible. If God gave us rights, only the Creator of those rights can take them away. No State, for reasons of its own, can take your life, your liberty, your property or any other right. They are God-given and our government recognizes this fact....the American people must never forget God, the source of their rights. A people, imbibed with the realization that their Creator endowed them with their individual rights, can never be sold on totalitarianism under any guise.

It is the aim and objective of this American Legion program to bring God to the foreground in American life, not merely the religious life, but the social, economic and political life as well. God is an essential part of real Americanism. Without God, there is no Americanism." All quotes from The American Legion "Back to God" Handbook.

It is noteworthy that in 2004 at their Nashville Convention, the American Legion of over 2 million members approved a Resolve to oppose Title 42 USC 1988 which gives special-interest attorneys like the ACLU the right to collect their legal fees out of your tax dollars! Smart move, these fellows - strip you of your rights and make you pay for it! All of America should stand up and praise the Legion for taking such a bold stand. I know of no other patriotic organization who has done so. Let the others act accordingly.

Why should we have to continue to pay for our own destruction, the loss of our Rights, our displaying of God's Law, praying simple prayers and holding Bible reading in our schools, long established customs which are hated by organizations like the ACLU?

We have a national covenant with almighty God of our fathers, whose son is the captain of our salvation, both militarily and politically, and whose wrath is seen in His rejection and judgments. We have just remembered this Compact - the Mayflower Compact - at Thanksgiving.

To the atheists and naysayers who wish these things weren't true, I say a fond farewell; you will soon know better. America is going 'Back to God.'
