Minorities

As soon as a person mentions a minority group in any way that is other than an unequivocal endorsement, they are likely to be labled a bigot or racist, or worse, and even more so if the person is an entertainer or in the media. In fact, as you well know, some extremes of free speech are deemed hate crimes by law and the politically correct. An e-mail sent to me a few weeks back highlighted the lopsidedness of the present situation regarding freedom of speech. So, despite the possible complaints by the chronically offended segment of the community, I feel the desire to share my personal feelings on the subject with you. This is a what-do-you-think column so feel free to let me know what you think of me. I am not promising to care what you think but I will print your views if they are creative and interesting - heck, I'll print them in this column even if they are not interesting and even if they are unsigned. There you go, this is your chance to abuse and ridicule me and call me a racist.

The e-mail I mentioned was about the inequity of the white American compared to other ethnic and minority groups when free speech and free association are concerned. Many groups that consider themselves victimized by white middle class heterosexual Americans have received preferential treatment both in law and socially, yet it is still not enough. The e-mail put this in perspective by exposing the inequity that has developed into reverse segregation and bigotry.

The e-mail reads:-

You have the United Negro College Fund.
You have Black History Month.
You have the NAACP.
You have Black Entertainment Television (BET).

If we had WET(White Entertainment Television) we'd be racists.
If we had a White Pride Day you would call us racists.
If we had White History Month, we'd be racists.

If we had any organization for only whites to "advance" our lives, we'd be racists.

There is a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Black Chamber of Commerce, an Asian Chamber of Commerce and even a Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce but if we had a White Chamber of Commerce we would be called racist.

If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships, you know we'd be racists. There are over 60 openly proclaimed Black Colleges in the US, yet if there were one "White college," that would be a racist college.

At the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights. If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists.

You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you're not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists.

You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction. You call me "White boy," "Cracker," "Honkey," "Whitey," "Caveman" and that's OK. but if I use an ethnic slur against you I can be arrested and jailed.

Ethnic, religious, political and social groups have been victimized throughout history but nowadays we believe we are sophisticated enough to rise about such trivialities but the very people who should know better still demand they be treated differently, only this time they want white people to be the victims.

That's what I think. What do you think?
