Summer in a Nutshell

by Jennifer Bowman

Summer always seems to have more and more fun than during the school year.  Maybe I'm just not paying attention due to all the massive amounts of studying I do, <sarcasm> but I really think that the summertime heat really draws something exciting out of people, whether it be good or bad.

There are always better movies in the summer, for instance, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  There's always more exciting news, like Hurricane Dennis and terrorist attacks in London.  I guess the heat is to blame for these things, or maybe I'm just noticing it more.  I'm not quite sure, but I do know for sure, this has been quite an eventful summer.

Natalee Holloway got nearly constant airtime for getting lost in Aruba, and while this is a tragic case and I do hope she is found, as remote as those possibilities are, people seem to forget that over a million children are reported missing in the United States alone each year.  I have no idea why some people choose some missing people over others.

But this airtime vanished after the July 7th terrorist attacks in London.  I was terrified the same thing would happen in America, and I was filled with sorrow for the victims of that attack.  The purpose of the attacks is the same as it was on 9/11 - to instill fear into hearts of citizens used to freedom and liberty.  Again, I just cannot simply comprehend the terrorist mind of finding this act "good" and freedom "bad".

However, that news was quickly covered up as well, with constant airtime of Hurricane Dennis.. the largest hurricane in Florida in 100 years, and the largest one ever for this time of year.

Now, I live in Florida, and I personally got to experience Hurricane Dennis.  It honestly wasn't that bad, at least in Tallahassee - one or two flicks of power, but the worst thing of all was that the Internet was out for nearly 24 hours.  Nothing else, the phone, cable and electricity worked fine.  Just the Internet.  Some sort of cruel trick of fate.  But after the Internet got back up, all was well once more.

There were also attacks in Egypt this summer, proving once more that these terrorists really do need to be stopped.

Another thing over the summer - a number of new shows have come on television.  Now, summer is not usually known for have good TV shows; in fact, it's known as the "rerun" season.  But comedic shows have made their way on the air, and thank goodness they did, or I would be even more bored than I am now.

If you have a stupid, bizarre sense of humor, I would suggest the Andy Milonakis show.  If you prefer something quirky, watch Stella.  And if you like rude, rash comedy - definitely watch Mind of Mencia.

Besides this, and a lying runaway bride getting a husband, felony charges dropped, AND a book/movie deal - there isn't much more to say about the summer than what's constantly being said on any news channel.
But school will start soon, and I will miss this more than anything in the world.
